Wishing Star

Wishing Star is a personal project about a young Doll living on a crafted moon, wanting to explore the Stars they look up at. One day, they wish upon a shooting star, but the selfish star refuses to grant their wish, and instead demands they grant her wishes.

It takes inspiration from things such as Mario Galaxy and Little Big Planet, and I would like to one day create a full short film based on these storyboards, and have ideas for future stories as well.

Opening

This opening takes inspiration from the original Snow White film by Walt Disney, with the Fairy Tale book opening to introduce us to the story, where the protagonist then wishes upon a star.

Finding the Bedroom

This storyboard showcases the Star exploring the moon the characters are on, and finding the bedroom of the Doll, where she learns more about them.

Resolution

In this part of the story, the Star understands the Dolls wish and feels bad, choosing to now grant it.

Astray

Astray was the main film I worked on during my last year of Animation at the University of Dundee. Its about a boy who gets lost in a forest, and is helped home by a mysterious Wolf.

While the core concept remained the same, the story beats would change a fair amount. I helped pitch some ideas such as the ending where the boy is reunited with his fathers, then continued to refine and develop those as the story changed around them.

Reuniting with the Dads

The boy finds his way back home where his worried fathers wait anxiously. I designed this scene to be light hearted with some comedy to release the tension. This scene had to be adapted as how the boy got back would change during development. This final version focuses on the dads sections, and how it fits with other storyboards.

Stone Buddies

This scene was added to add a little tension in the middle of the plot, where the boy kicks a stone and a surrounding family of rocks group together to confront him. This scene needed redesigned quite a bit as the original had a lot of cutting, so I attempted to turn it into mostly one long panning shot. This would be the final for a good portion of the development, until it was decided to cut the panning shot into 4 smaller close ups, but would use the same layout and framing in these boards.

Somnia

Somnia was the personal project of a friend, about a woman who loves books being drawn into a fantasy world which seems perfect at first, but is revealed to be a trap and she is stuck inside the book forever.

I offered to help out the showrunner with some elements of development, which included some storyboards.

Opening

The opening was originally quite quick, with the protagonist already asleep and immediately sucked into the book. I pitched this alternate take to the showrunner, which shows the protagonist having a bad day, making the fantasy world she's drawn into later more alluring. The showrunner liked the alternate take but due to limitations it was rejected in favour of a simpler opening to focus more on the core fantasy sequence.
